SKS Acceleration Model: Vikram Akula, Founder & CEO, SKS Microfinance

Vikram will present an overview of the microfinance industry, the origins of SKS and the unique growth model that has attracted the interest of equity investors like Sequoia Capital and commercial banks like Citibank. Vikram will also discuss SKS' new Ultra Poor program, a social and economic development intervention working with the poorest of the poor.

Named one of TIME Magazine's 100 Most Influential People in The World in 2006, Vikram founded SKS in 1998 with a mission to empower the poor to become economically self-reliant by providing financial services in a sustainable manner; today, SKS is one of the fastest growing microfinance institutions in the world, with over 750,000 customers 175% annual growth rate. A former management consultant with McKinsey & Company, Vikram has over a decade of work and research experience in microfinance. He was a Fulbright Scholar in India and a researcher with the Worldwatch Institute, where he wrote articles focused on poverty and development. He has also worked as a community organizer with the Deccan Development Society in India.

He holds a B.A. from Tufts, an M.A. from Yale, and has a Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. His Ph.D. dissertation focused on the impact of microfinance. He has received several awards for his work with SKS, including the Ernst & Young Start Up Entrepreneur of the Year (India), the Schwab Social Entrepreneur of the Year (India) and the Echoing Green Public Service Entrepreneur Fellowship and has been profiled in media ranging from CNN to the front page of the Wall Street Journal.
